Instructors

Horie Art School’s instructors work as manga artists, illustrators and painters. Through years of drawing, they know well both the joy they have felt and the difficulty of not being able to draw the way they want. Drawing on that experience, they take each student’s “I want to draw something like this” seriously.

From discovering manga at ten to teaching others

I came to Japan when I was ten.
One day at a friend’s home, I read Marmalade Boy in the girls’ manga magazine Ribon without understanding any Japanese.

I knew neither the earlier story nor the words, yet I cried as a child when I saw the heroine separate from her boyfriend.

That was when I decided to become a manga artist, and at fourteen I submitted to Shueisha for the first time and received my first award.
I was later selected in several competitions held by major publishers and worked with an editor, but I did not make my professional debut.

After stepping away from manga, I realized that fifteen years of drawing had also taught me how to illustrate, design, and write.

By sharing the joy and value of manga and illustration, I hope to help the people who attend our school live richer and happier lives.

Anyone can start with paper and a pencil. Even without words, you can express yourself through drawing. Bring the things you find cool from all kinds of worlds into your work. I’ll help you draw pictures full of personality. I want to see lots of your work!

A message from our director

To anyone unsure whether to take art lessons. “I want to be able to draw.” “I want to draw the things I love myself.” I hope you will treasure that feeling. What a child loves can be the doorway to their life. For adults, “I’d like to try” can become time to return to yourself in a busy day. Soon after I opened the school, I met the painter Morio Matsui. What stayed with me from our conversation was that drawing becomes “energy for living”, that we should listen to the frustrations and joys of the person who drew, and that art gives the heart room to breathe. In that moment I felt that my job was to keep creating a place where students can draw freely. Horie Art School is not only for people who can already draw. People who can’t draw well yet, who don’t know what to practise, who love drawing but lack confidence: here the instructors look at the work together with them, so that little by little they come to like their own drawings. Start with a trial lesson, and see the classroom atmosphere and how you get on with the instructors.

How will they teach you?
Find out in a trial lesson.

Are the explanations clear? Is it easy to ask questions? Take an actual lesson and see whether the school suits you.
